Wildflowers of the Smokies

Wildflowers of the Smokies

This March and April, we've seen a stunning variety of colorful, delicate wildflowers lining the roads and extending their blooming reach deep into the mountains here in Tennessee. Some of the most popular and earliest blooms we see around here are the Daffodils, with their tube-like, sturdy stems and trumpet-shaped blooms in bright yellow, soft peach, vivid orange, and crisp white.

In addition to the warm colors of the daffodils, we're also seeing a remarkable array of dainty violets in cool blues and vibrant purples. The redbud trees are blooming in hot magenta, making bright splotches of almost-neon pink against the greys of the roads and the greens of the conifers in the background. We see red columbines, firepinks, and bright, large trilliums blooming in golden yellow all throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this month so far.

All these vibrant floral colors are set in perfect contrast against the lush greens of maidenhair ferns and grasses as well as the deep hunter-green needles of the spruce and hemlocks, which have held their leaves through winter. It's springtime in the Smokies, and so far we're very impressed with the display!
