Members of the horse family, zebras are known for their boldly patterned black and white striped coats. Each stripe pattern, like a human fingerprint, is completely unique to each individual zebra. Zebras live in a range of habitats, from grasslands to mountains to coastal hills.
Like horses, they have four gaits: walk, trot, canter, and gallop. Though generally slower than horses, zebras have incredible stamina when running that allows them to run long distances avoiding predators.
Zebras have excellent eyesight as well as night vision, and even better hearing than horses because of their larger, rounder ears. Their exotic stripe patterns are believed to be a form of camouflage that help the zebra blend into the grassline in prairie settings. Though not many people realize it, a zebra's body is actually black with white stripes and not white with black stripes.
