Most people know that a group of lions is called a "pride," but beyond that commonly used term, not many people are aware of the fun English vocabulary words that exists for describing other groups of species. Whether you're a language enthusiast, an avid wildlife researcher, or just an interested Googler, it's fun to learn the collective nouns for your favorite animals, because these terms often provide some insight into the cultural perception of different animal species.

Take, for instance, the term "murder" used to describe a group of crows. Could it be, perhaps, because the funereal color of the birds' plumage, and the fact that, when seen in a large group (as crows often congregate in hundreds), the black color against the light blue sky evokes a feeling of death-like darkness? Or is it because crows scavenge and are sometimes seen gathered around recently-killed animals? There's some debate about the origins of this term, but either way, it's a useful one to know!
