Three species of bear live in North America: the American Black Bear (which is the most common species in the U.S.), the Grizzly or Brown Bear, and the Polar Bear (which can be found in Canada and some parts of northern Alaska).
The Grizzly Bear or Brown bear is typically found throughout Canada, and in the Northwestern United States. With shaggy brown hair and a "grizzled" appearance on occasion, these large mammals can be spotted in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Washington states.
Black Bears are more common in the contiguous United States, and are also found in nearly all provinces in Canada. Though called "black," these bears can actually range in color from deep black to light brown to white.
