It's that time of year again... the week when the whole world seems to notice and celebrate the beauty, intelligence, and strength of sharks. This year marks the 30th season of this special wildlife-themed "holiday" week, where shark lovers and those afraid of sharks come together to watch TV specials about different shark species, habitats, and research.
Begun by the Discovery Channel as a yearly, week-long focus on shark-related issues, Shark Week has spread into pop culture with alarming ferocity. This year, celebrity sports star Shaquille O'neal enters the picture for a shark-themed special feature. Shaq will train with Ex-Navy/Marine comedian Rob Riggle for a dangerous televised swim with sharks. Olympian and UFC Hall of Famer Ronda Rousey will train with Paul De Gelder through three rounds of survival training swimming with Bull sharks, leading up to the "main event," where she will swim uncaged with Mako sharks.
