Bison are the largest mammals in North America. Male bison are called bulls and can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Fully-grown adult male bison can stand up to 6 feet tall.
Female bison, called cows, can weigh up to 1,000 pounds and reach a height of 4-5 pounds. At birth, bison calves can weigh between 40 and 70 pounds. What a LARGE baby!
The words bison and buffalo are often used interchangeably, but in North America the scientific name is just bison. The full scientific name is actually Bison bison bison - genus: Bison, species: bison, subspecies: bison... but that's quite a mouthful.
Many historians believe that the alternative term - buffalo - comes from the french word for "beef" - spelled "boeuf."
