Lynx is the name given to any of four species within the Lynx genus of medium-sized, wild cats. The name originated in Middle English, from the Greek for "light" and "brightness," because of the lynx's super-reflective eyes.
Most lynx species are identifiable because of the unique tufts of black hair that form at the tip of their ears. They have large, padded paws that aid in walking on snow, and short tails unlike other big cat species.
Usually a solitary creature, the lynx sometimes travels in small groups when traveling or hunting. They prefer wooded habitats with dense shrubbery, tall grass, and high altitudes for stalking their prey. The lynx is a powerful, stealthy predator that feeds on a wide variety of animals, from whitetail deer to rabbits, foxes, sheep, and mice.
