A beloved and revered predator, the gator may be one of the most well-adapted creatures on earth. With a strong tail, thick skin, and calm demeanor that can turn on a dime into necessary, meal-scoring aggression, alligators are fascinating. They're also an ancient animal, and can grow up to 11 or 12 feet long. They can weigh up to a half a ton, or 1,000 lbs.

The American Alligator lives in the Southeastern United States, from North Carolina down to Florida. They often gather in groups called congregations, and can be seen basking in the heat of the southern sunshine.
