It's estimated that at one time there existed over two hundred and fifty different species of elephants in the world, but today there are two distinct, living species of elephants left: the African Elephant and the Asian Elephant.
The largest of the two species, the African Elephant has extremely large ears (think Dumbo!) and both the males and females of this species grow long, thick tusks that protrude from beneath each side of their trunks.
The Asian Elephant, while still extremely large, is slightly smaller than the African Elephant species, and the ears of Asian Elephants are also smaller in proportion to their bodies.
